Chelsfield Primary School

Physical Education

Intent

At Chelsfield we know that pupils enjoy being active and using their creativity and imagination in physical activity.

We help them learn new skills, find out how to use them in different ways, and link them to make actions, phrases and sequences of movements. We encourage pupils to enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. We also develop their understanding of how to succeed in different activities and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success. We understand that learning about fitness and health is an important part of the curriculum and we promote this through all of our curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Implementation

Throughout their time at this school, pupils are taught the knowledge, skills and understanding of:

  • dance - modern, traditional and folk styles;
  • games - football, tennis, rugby, hockey, lacrosse, cricket, netball and rounder’s;
  • gymnastics;
  • swimming and water safety;
  • athletics;
  • outdoor and adventurous activities.

In addition to the timetabled curriculum, the school has sports coaches that run play activities at lunchtime and run multisport afterschool clubs. The school also provides additional swimming lessons for Year 6 to ensure that all children can swim at least 25m. We hold a sports day each year and children have opportunities to compete in House competitions and with other schools

Impact

We ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the necessary skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise. We aspire for children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity which becomes part of their future life outside of primary school. Children can represent the school at sporting events from local to county level. Alongside this, we share sporting achievements both in and out of school in our Celebration Assembly, so that we are promoting sports and activities, as well as celebrating all levels of success.
